About Us

Lytro is transforming the camera into a powerful computational photography platform, forever changing the way everyone takes and experiences pictures.

Lytro was founded in 2006 by Executive Chairman Ren Ng, whose Ph.D. research on light field photography won Stanford University’s prize for best thesis in computer science in 2006 as well as the internationally recognized ACM Dissertation award.

In 2012, Lytro released the world’s first consumer Light Field Camera which offers photographic capabilities never before possible, such as focusing a picture after it’s taken, changing the perspective in the picture and creating interactive living pictures that can be endlessly refocused and enjoyed by friends and family online. Lytro was named one of Time Magazine's 50 Best Inventions of 2011, was Popular Science's Innovation of the Year, 2011 and took home the Last Gadget Standing Award and Best of Innovations Award for Digital Imaging at CES in 2012.

Based in Mountain View, CA, Lytro is backed by top-tier VCs Andreessen-Horowitz, Greylock Partners and NEA and has attracted a world-class team from companies like Apple, Google, nVidia and a host of successful startups.

Today Lytro cameras are available in the US through premier channels such as Best Buy, B&H, Amazon.com and Target.com and also through international retail partners in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the U.K., Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, and Canada.

As the interest and demand for light field technology rapidly grows in the U.S. and around the world, the Lytro product and engineering teams are continuously enhancing the current product and platform, recently announcing the Lytro Mobile app which lets people share and experience light field pictures on-the-go from their camera via iOS devices. Furthermore, the team is busy working on the next generation of Lytro products that will set a whole new standard for quality, performance and user experience in computational photography.
